Zanskar Valley Expedition with Padum & Drang Drung

Arrive in Manali by morning and check into your hotel. Dedicate the afternoon to gentle acclimatization—explore the historic Hadimba Temple, wander through the vibrant culture and cafes of Old Manali, and stroll down Mall Road. In the evening, gather for a comprehensive safety briefing, route orientation, and mandatory high-altitude gear inspection led by your expedition leader.

Begin the high-altitude journey driving through the engineering marvel of the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul Valley. Ascend the formidable Shinku La Pass ($16,580\text{ ft}$), crossing from Himachal into the rugged wilderness of Zanskar. Arrive at the foot of Gombo Rangzan, the sacred and solitary rock monolith. Enjoy an unforgettable evening of high-altitude stargazing and an overnight stay at Kargyak or Purne.

Embark on an iconic day trek to the 12th-century Phuktal Cave Monastery, a spectacular architectural wonder built into a sheer cliff face high above the turquoise Tsarap River. Interact with local monks and experience the tranquil sanctuary of the cave complex. Return to the trail head and continue the overland drive through the striking landscapes of Lungnak Valley to reach Padum, the administrative heart of Zanskar.

Spend the day exploring the highlights of central Zanskar. Visit Karsha Monastery, the largest and most prominent Gelugpa monastery in the region, offering panoramic valley views. Later, drive up to Pensi La Pass ($14,400\text{ ft}$) to witness the jaw-dropping expanse of the Drang Drung Glacier, one of the largest glaciers in the Indian Himalayas. Return to Padum for an overnight stay.

Bid farewell to central Zanskar and trace your route back across Shinku La Pass, descending into the lush green valley of Lahaul. Arrive at the scenic village of Jispa by late afternoon. Unwind by the Bhaga River with a warm group bonfire, sharing stories from the trail under the stars.

After breakfast, drive from Jispa back toward Manali, passing the picturesque Sissu Waterfall and re-transiting the Atal Tunnel. Arrive in Manali with free time for souvenir shopping, exploring local markets, or grabbing an early dinner. Re-group by 6:00 PM to board your overnight Volvo coach back to Delhi.

Reach Delhi early in the morning (between 7:00 AM and 8:30 AM). Disembark at the drop-off point, marking the end of an extraordinary high-altitude Zanskar wilderness expedition with lifelong memories.
