Zanskar From Delhi: Shinku La & Gonbo Rangjon Expedition
Delhi — Manali — Atal Tunnel — Sissu — Keylong — Jispa — Shinku La Pass — Gonbo Rangjon — Manali — Delhi
About This Trip
Leave behind the polished city skylines, the crowded tourist trails, and the repetitive daily grind. The mountains are calling for those who carry an untamed wanderer’s heart, and this expedition into the raw borderlands of Zanskar is curated for pure adventure.
This isn't just a standard mountain getaway—it is an authentic Awara Banjara pilgrimage into rugged high-altitude terrain, where roaring glacial rivers cut through steep canyons and the horizon opens up to reveal giants of rock and ice. Designed for real explorers, spirited solo travelers, and community road-trippers, this 5-day journey strikes the perfect balance between high-adrenaline transit and peaceful Himalayan moments.
The Gateway to High Altitude
Your journey begins with an overnight ride from the bustling plains of Delhi, cutting straight toward the mist-wrapped Pir Panjal range. As the morning light touches Manali, our mountain caravan takes over. You leave conventional tourist routes behind and plunge through the monumental engineering feat of the Atal Tunnel. Emerging onto the other side feels like crossing into an entirely different planet: the lush green slopes of Kullu drop away, replaced by the wind-swept, stark grandeur of the Lahaul Valley.
You will watch the cascading glacial fall at Sissu tumble down jagged cliffs, trace the contours of the Bhaga River through Keylong, and settle into the quiet, starlit valley of Jispa. Evening in Jispa is spent the classic Banjara way—huddled around a crackling bonfire beneath an unpolluted Milky Way, sharing stories with fellow travelers as the river roars softly in the dark.
Conquering Shinku La & The Sacred Monolith
The true climax of this expedition lies beyond the border check-posts of Darcha. Ascending deep into the remote wilderness, we scale the mighty Shinku La Pass (16,500+ ft)—a formidable mountain frontier permanently crowned with snow and raw Himalayan wind. Standing at the crest of Shinku La, where prayer flags flutter fiercely against the thin mountain air, you experience the absolute stillness and power of the high Himalayas.
Descending into the secluded frontier of Zanskar, the scenery shifts into dramatic moonscapes until you stand face-to-face with Gonbo Rangjon. Rising thousands of feet from the barren valley floor, this sacred, freestanding dark rock tower stands as a solitary sentinel over the wilderness. It is an awe-inspiring, spiritual sight that very few travelers ever witness in their lifetime—a timeless geological wonder that commands silent respect.
Culture, Cedar Forests & Clear Horizons
After absorbing the raw energy of Zanskar, the route traces its way back across Lahaul to Manali. But the expedition isn't complete without soaking in the deep roots of Himachal culture. Walk under towering centuries-old deodars to pay homage at the ancient Hidimba Devi Temple, hike the fresh pine trails toward the hidden sprays of Jogini Waterfall, and spend a relaxed evening soaking in the vibrant bohemian hum of Old Manali’s cafes and handicraft alleys.
The Awara Banjara Promise
We build our expeditions on complete operational clarity, rock-solid mountain logistics, experienced route captains, and zero hidden terms.
