The overnight journey allows you to rest while winding upward into the scenic Himalayan foothills, setting the stage for the thrilling winter expedition ahead in Spiti.
Arrive in Shimla early in the morning and meet your expedition crew before transitioning into comfortable 4x4 vehicles specially equipped for snow conditions. Embark on a dramatic drive through the Kinnaur region and the breathtaking Sangla Valley. Your destination is Chitkul, the final inhabited village near the Indo-Tibetan border. Experience the crisp winter air and snow-draped landscapes before settling in for an overnight stay in Chitkul or Sangla.
Depart Chitkul and begin an awe-inspiring exploration drive deeper into the Spiti region toward Tabo. En route, stop to visit the serene Nako village along with its high-altitude lake frozen over during winter. Next, make a fascinating detour to Gue village to view the remarkable 500-year-old naturally mummified monk preserved at Gue Monastery. Continue onward to Tabo for an overnight stay.
Start your day exploring the ancient Tabo Monastery, often called the "Ajanta of the Himalayas" for its historic frescoes and priceless artwork. After immersing yourself in its tranquil heritage, drive toward Kaza. Along the way, take a spectacular detour to the cliffside Dhankar Monastery, which dramatically overlooks the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers. Arrive in Kaza for your overnight stay.
Dedicate the day to exploring Spiti’s iconic high-altitude villages surrounding Kaza. Send a postcard from Hikkim, home to the world's highest post office, visit the remote high-altitude village of Komic, and admire the majestic Buddha statue at Langza. Walk across the thrilling Chicham Bridge suspended over a deep gorge, and visit the iconic snow-covered Key Monastery perched on a hilltop. Return to Kaza for an overnight stay.
Begin your return journey heading back toward Kinnaur to reach the charming town of Kalpa. The scenic winter drive offers dramatic views of snow-dusted valleys and pine forests. Upon arrival in Kalpa, take in the breathtaking panorama of the sacred Kinner Kailash mountain range glowing in the sunlight. Spend the evening relaxing and enjoying an overnight stay in Kalpa.
Depart Kalpa and navigate the winding mountain roads back down through Kinnaur toward Shimla. Enjoy the final glimpses of high Himalayan scenery as you descend back to lower elevations. Upon reaching Shimla in the evening, board your overnight Volvo bus or transit vehicle back toward Delhi, giving you time to unwind and reflect on an unforgettable winter adventure.
Arrive early in the morning back in Delhi, marking the end of your exhilarating 8-day Spiti winter 4x4 expedition.
